Urgent Update: Crisis in Punta Cana/Monte Verde

Dear 2nd Mile Missions Family,
We are writing to you today with heavy hearts to share an urgent and devastating update regarding the community of Monte Verde, home to many of the children and families that we serve.
Over the past several weeks, the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Immigration, alongside police and military forces, has intensified efforts to locate and deport undocumented individuals, particularly focusing on the Haitian community. Sadly, Monte Verde — a village where many of our students and their families live — has been at the center of these operations.
Last week, in a sweeping and heartbreaking move, authorities bulldozed the entire Monte Verde community. Homes were leveled to the ground, leaving thousands of individuals — including young children and families — without shelter and at immediate risk of deportation. The impact of this destruction is profound. Families have been displaced overnight, forced into hiding, or already deported, often without time to gather belongings or make arrangements for their safety.
This crisis has deeply affected our school. Over 100 students have not been attending classes, either because their families are living in fear, are in hiding, or have already been deported. These children — once thriving in an environment of learning, growth, and hope — are now facing an uncertain and dangerous future.
We grieve with these families. Many of them have long been part of our 2nd Mile Missions family — courageous parents who have sought only to build a better life for their children through education, hard work, and community.
In the midst of this heartbreak, we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve the children God has entrusted to us. Our staff on the ground are working tirelessly to locate and support affected families, offer resources where possible, and advocate for the safety and dignity of those at risk. We are exploring every option available to provide stability, support, and care during this incredibly difficult time.
To our sponsors and donors: your faithful support is more important now than ever. While many of our students are temporarily unable to attend school, your sponsorship continues to provide critical stability — helping us keep our school ready to welcome students back as soon as it is safe, support displaced families, and prepare for the long road of rebuilding ahead.
We ask for your prayers — for protection, wisdom, and provision. We also ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate this rapidly evolving situation.
As of now, the church in Monte Verde where 2nd Mile Missions began is still standing. We will continue to keep you informed in the days and weeks ahead. Thank you for standing with us, for loving these children, and for embodying the mission of going the second mile in love and service.
With gratitude and hope,
The 2nd Mile Missions Team
