Update: The Aftermath in Monte Verde

Dear 2nd Mile Missions Family,
Just a few weeks ago, we shared the heartbreaking news about the demolition of the Monte Verde community — a place that so many of our students and their families once called home. Since then, we have continued to walk through the aftermath of this tragedy, doing all we can to support affected families and remain faithful to the children God has entrusted to us.
Today, we want to provide you with an important update.
As of now, only 19 of our students are still missing from our schools. These remaining children are likely either in hiding, have relocated with relatives, or have already been deported. Our team is actively working to reestablish contact with these families, seeking any opportunity to offer support.
In addition to the children in our program, the destruction of Monte Verde has had a far-reaching impact on the broader educational landscape. The community had two other schools — a public school and a small school run out of the back of the local church. Both have been shut down since the demolition of the village, leaving over 100 children without access to education. The church and school building are among the few structures still standing, but Monte Verde itself is now completely uninhabited. The families who once filled it with life and community are gone — scattered, deported, or living temporarily with others in the surrounding area.
This crisis has created deep uncertainty for hundreds of children. While our school remains open and ready, many families are simply not in a position to return. Yet even amid this darkness, we continue to see God’s light — in the resilience of the children who do show up each day, in the dedication of our staff, and in the faithful support of people like you.
We are incredibly grateful to share that, through your generosity, we have raised $54,575 toward supporting displaced families and students.
We ask you to continue standing with us. Pray for the safety and peace of these displaced families. Pray for wisdom as we seek creative solutions to continue reaching and educating these children. And pray for open doors — both literally and figuratively — that might allow these students to return to school and regain some sense of normalcy.
Thank you for your continued support, your prayers, and your commitment to walking the second mile with us — especially now, when the journey is steep.
With gratitude and hope,
The 2nd Mile Missions Team
