Our ministry to the people in Bavaro, Dominican Republic began in December 2006 when visiting a resort on a family vacation. Our desire during the trip was to bring medicine, toys, and clothes to poor and needy kids in the area. We connected with a local pastor who invited us to meet a group of kids from his church and share our gifts. Following our visit, Pastor Pascual Borrel shared his vision and passion to help the poor in his community and gave us the opportunity to help. We returned to Bavaro in May with a team of 10 people who spent a week building a school and providing a Vacation Bible School for kids. The school, located in a Haitian village opened in the fall of 2007 with 2 teachers and 75 kids.
God has put 2nd Mile Missions in a unique partnership with Pastor Borrell and his church, “City of God for the Nations”. Our joint passion to break the cycle of poverty through education has led us to build another school on the church property that provides education for over 600 children. The Christian school will provide education from preschool through the 12th grade when completed. Students also receive Bible training, medical and dental care and one hot meal a day.
Taking care of a child’s basic needs such as education and physical health in a loving, nurturing Christian environment will help a child stuck in poverty to become a productive, independent adult who can continue to love and serve God forever. We are committed to Christ, the children, and our calling to partner with the local church to break the cycle of poverty.
