Healthy Foundations

One way to fight poverty is through nutrition, physical activity and good hygiene. This program provides the essentials for every student to begin to develop healthy habits:

Optometry: Uno Mas Missions partners with 2nd Mile Missions and holds local eye exams for the people of Bavaro and surrounding Dominican towns.

Medical and Dental Clinic: Once a year a team of Doctors and Dentists from the US will visit the school and provide a check-up for each child. Growth will be monitored, minor inflictions treated and any major medical issues will be tackled.

Hygiene and Nutrition instruction:  The medical staff will offer instruction on nutrition and proper diet, how to have healthy bodies and sexual development. Classes will also be offered to parents so the healthy habits can become a reality in the home. Mission trip groups distribute toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap and shampoo a few times a year.

Supplemental Food:  Each day a hot meal will be offered to each student. Additional food and vitamins will be distributed when available.

Physical activity:  Physical Education classes are offered for every student to keep them active and teach the importance of exercise and staying physically active. Extra-curricular sports are also offered for students who desire to extend their physical education opportunities.

Family to Family:  Individuals can help the family of their sponsored child by providing grocery money each month. Up to $50 a month will be placed as credit to a local grocery store.
