Miracles
by Rod and Nancy Wildman on 12/19/11
Miracles. I have been thinking a lot about them lately. Some people don’t believe in them. Of course there were people who walked beside Jesus when he fed the 5000 and still didn’t believe in miracles either. I have learned that God does miracles all the time. We just have to open our eyes and mostly our minds to see and accept them. I have seen some pretty cool miracles happening at 2nd Mile Education Center. I have 185 sponsors who pray for the kids they sponsor and from those prayers I have witnessed changed lives. Little girls who are saved from prostitution. A homeless boy who can spend most of his day in a safe place which gives him hope for future. A teacher lovingly sharing the story of Jesus’ birth in a manger to her 4 year old class. These are miracles to me. These are things that have happened because of a lot of prayer and generosity from so many people who have listened to God and obeyed his promptings. I am thankful for the miracles God does us. It increases my faith and makes me know HE can do the impossible. There will be many more miracles next year too. Because there are many more lives to save and change at 2nd Mile Education Center
A life saved from prostitution
by Rod and Nancy Wildman on 10/27/11
Rafelina is a teenage girl that wanted to find a way out of her family business of prostitution. Her mother and sisters are all prostitutes and she was pulled out of school after her 4th grade year. She is 18 now, and knows the only way out of prostitution is to get an education. Without her parent’s knowledge, Rafelina came to 2nd Mile Education Center to ask if she could be enrolled. When she met with the principal she did not tell her of her background, only that she had not been in school for a while and wanted to see if she could finish. Joanna, the principal, asked her to come back with her parents and her official paperwork and then a decision would be made. Rafelina left the school but knowing she had neither her parents support nor any paperwork, she burst into tears and turned back to Joanna’s office. She explained the whole story and promised that no matter what grade she was placed in, she would work her hardest to achieve, learn and pass each grade level. Joanna saw the determination in her spirit and agreed to give her placement tests to see where she fit. She is currently in 5th grade and has been challenged to not only be a role model to her much younger students, but to try and complete 2 years of school every year so she will graduate in 4 years.
It is because of the support of our sponsors that girls like Rafelina can be saved from a life of despair and given hope for a brighter future. We pray that Rafelina will also meet Jesus while in school and be able to share His love to her entire family. A young life changed and a family transformed!
Homeless, but now hopeful!

He lives alone in the poor Haitian village of Monte Verde. He is only 14. This has been his home for over 5 years but this summer his parents decided to go back to Haiti and leave Roger in the care of his uncle. That arrangement worked for a time until the uncle ended up in jail. Alone, with no money, no parents and no hope, Roger decided to find a job to keep himself alive. He walked over 4 miles to the center of Bavaro to work for a man who sold items on the street corner. His pay was acceptable, for a 14 year old. His neighbors offered him one meal a day which would sustain him. Then a friend of his who attends 2nd Mile Education Center told him that he could go to school for free. Roger was not aware that this was possible, so one day he walked to the school and met with the Director. He knew education was the long term ticket out of poverty. He explained his situation to Yohanna, the Director, and she immediately signed him up! Roger even had enough money to purchase the school uniform. After initial academic testing, he was placed in 6th grade. He now rides the free bus to the free school that offers him a free education and a hot meal every day. It has become his hope for a better future!!
